Alison Rose Jefferson
15 mins · Los Angeles, CA, United States ·
On Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 7:00 PM, I Alison Rose Jefferson will do a presentation on the early twentieth century Black Angeleno resort in Manhattan beach known as Bruce’s Beach at the Manhattan Beach Library (1320 Highland Avenue, MB, CA 90266). In the program entitled “African American Leisure, Southern California Tales and Bruces’ Beach” I will discuss the history of the site and its agents, along with the misinformation passed down over the century and facts of the contentious relationship of the Bruces and City founder George Peck. I will discuss new information unearthed for my UC Santa Barbara dissertation study, “Leisure’s Race, Power and Place: The Recreation and Remembrance of African Americans in the California Dream.” This manuscript is being prepared for book publication. Hope to see you on April 26. Please feel free to share this information. PlacesInTheCity
