To celebrate the birth of pioneering Senegalese female filmmaker
Khady Sylla (March 1963 – October 2013), ADIFF is pleased to
present two of her films, Colobane Express and The Silent Monologue.

Colobane Express
Colobane Express opens a window on a slice of life in the busy urban metropolis of Dakar, Senegal, where drivers and their trainees are always on the go, managing relationship and conflicts, dealing with the competition and providing an invaluable service to demanding yet loving customers.

The Silent Monologue
In The Silent Monologue, we hear the thoughts of Amy, a girl from a rural region of Senegal. A domestic for a well-to-do family in Dakar, Amy wonders, “Why does the emancipation of some result in the servitude of others?”

Sexy Money

In recent years, a growing group of illegal prostitutes from West Africa has settled in the suburbs of major cities both in the Netherlands and in the rest of Europe. The women go there in order to escape poverty, but for most of them, the European adventure is a disappointment that ends when they fly back to Nigeria empty-handed.
The film listens to these women talk about their European adventures and shows the development of two women who, after returning to Nigeria, try to build a new life.

Cape Verde, My Love

In Praïa, Cape Verde, Laura, Flavia and Bela are childhood friends. Each leads her own life and each meet from time to time to dance, dine and have fun. However, when Flavia’s husband assaults Laura’s 13-year old eldest daughter, their lives will alter drastically. In these onscreen depictions, provided is a critical look at a dynamic between Cape Verdean men and women.

Stand Down Soldier tells the story of Sergeant Stacy Armstrong who returns home from three deployments suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Soon after her return, she and her husband realize that their 20-year marriage is about to be another casualty of war.

Expertly combining archival footage and recent interviews to craft a portrait of genuine heroism, Ninth Floor is a timely reminder of the importance of civil disobedience, particularly in times when governmental powers go unchecked.

NELIO’S STORY

Shot in Mozambique and based on a novel by Swedish writer Henning Mankell, Nelio’s Story depicts the life of an orphan boy, Nelio. After escaping a civil war that killed his entire family, a wounded Nelio is found by a baker in the capital Mapouto; refusing medical treatment, the boy instead asks for sanctuary so he can tell his tragic yet mythical tale.

She gets approached by Maraea, the servant of a wealthy woman, Rebecca, who seeks her knowledge and assistance in order to hide a secret which could destroy Rebecca’s position in European settler society.

WHITE LIKE THE MOON
A Mexican-American girl struggles to keep her identity when her mother forces her to bleach her skin. White Like the Moon is a revealing film about a dilemma not very well known outside Latino communities; that of the myth of the light skin superiority in Indigenous and Indigenous descendant communities.

ADBIAS DO NASCIMENTO

The Afro-Brazilian scholar, writer, activist and politician Abdias do Nascimento (1930-2011) was not only a significant figure in and leader in Brazil’s Black Movement, but was very active in the international Pan-African Movement. Through interviews with Ruth de Souza, Lea Garcia and other political and theater partners, the film portrays do Nascimento as an unforgettable Brazilian politician and activist.
